Yorkshire Carnegie 19 London Scottish 8

22nd October 2017 4:25 pm By .

Yorkshire Carnegie got back to winning ways, with a 19-8 win over London Scottish in the British and Irish Cup.

Carnegie faced set backs ahead of the game with Chris Elder ruled out with a hamstring injury and then just minutes into the game, Tom Bullough, who had come into the starting line up picked up an injury and had to leave the field to be replaced by Andy Forsyth,

After losing their last two games Carnegie were looking for a big performance to earn their first win in the Cup competition and they faced a tough task against the team who had beaten them on the opening day of the season in windy conditions at Ilkley RUFC, the first on the road venue of the season.

The wind played its part in the first half and errors from both sides meant that neither side were able to build much momentum. There were glimmers of chances for Carnegie in the first half with Pete Lucock, who was named captain in the game coming close, only to be pulled back for a forward pass.  Carnegie were strong in defence throughout and the game remained deadlocked until the 36 minute when Carnegie were penalised at the ruck and Scottish fly half Basil Strang stepped up to kick a penalty straight down the middle to bring the half time score to 0-3.

Carnegie started the second half well and were soon rewarded with a try on 42 minutes. After earning a penalty the team opted to kick to touch and from the resulting line out they got the ball away to Will Homer and the scrum half showed his strength to break through the Scottish defence and score. McColl landed the conversion to give his side a 7-3 lead.

Scottish hit back and after a long period of possession in the Carnegie half Ben Mosses crashed over from close range, Strang, kicking into the strong wind though was unable to add the conversion so Carnegie were within a point of their opponents at 7-8.

The home side retook the lead in the 69th minute after winning possession at the line out and Joe Buckle raced to the corner for Carnegie’s second try. McColl was unable to add the tricky touchline conversion but went into the final ten minutes looking in control and with a 12-8 lead.

Some fine work from the backs almost set up an opportunity for Forsyth to race clear but once again the team were pulled back from a forward pass.

With three minutes left to play Carnegie put the game beyond doubt with a well worked try. After Andy Forsyth made the break down the wing the ball was passed inside to debutant Sam Wolstenholme, who sprinted clear next to the posts,

McColl was on target with the conversion to wrap up the 19-8 win for James Lowes’ side.
