Yorkshire Carnegie continued their unbeaten run at Headingley Carnegie with a six try win against Bedford Blues in the Greene King IPA Championship.

Carnegie came into the game just one place behind Bedford in the Greene King IPA Championship.  Fixtures between these sides have a history of being close affairs and this once again proved to be the case with the game going down to the final kick of the game.  The Blues had the chance to level the game in the final play, but Will Hooley missed the conversion kick meaning Carnegie took maximum points from the game.

Both teams played some good attacking rugby leading to an entertaining and high scoring game as Bedford looked for their first ever win at Headingley Carnegie.  Carnegie had early opportunities to take the lead with Chris Elder making a good break before being stopped short by the Bedford defence.

Yorkshire Carnegie went ahead after six minutes with the pack showing their dominance in the maul to drive Mike Mayhew over following a line out.  Stevie McColl, on kicking duty for the day, was on target with the conversion to put his side 7-0 in front.

The visitors hit back on 14 minutes with a counter attack after Tom Casson’s attempt to kick clear the ball deflected and went into the hands of Bedford.  Jordan Burns got the ball out wide to Mike Le Bourgeois, and the centre linked up with Jordan Burns to race through before combining with Dean Adamson to get his side close.  Le Bourgeois was just stopped short of the line but the pressure on the Carnegie line finally led to a try for former Carnegie player Jarad Williams who dived over under the posts and Harry Sheppard converted to level the game.

The game continued its end to end nature and Carnegie were soon back in front.  From the line out Will Homer looked lively as he took the ball close before being brought down by Alex Rae, Mayhew then scooped up the loose ball and charges his way through a gap for his second try of the game in the 24th minute. On this occasion McColls kick bounced off the posts.

On 29 minutes Bedford edged in front following good work by their forwards which set up winger Dean Adamson.  Sheppard picked up the ball from the back of the ruck and spotted the onrunning Adamson, who raced through a the Carnegie defence for a try in the corner.  Sheppard’s conversion giving the Blues a two points lead and he increased that six minutes before the break with a penalty to make it 12-17.

With a minute left to play Carnegie retook the lead with a try from Chris Elder.  Jack Whetton made a superb break from his own 10 metre line and powered his way deep into the Bedford half.  With the defence closing in he showed great awareness to throw a perfectly timed pass to Elder, who then held off his defender and raced to over the try line.  McColl converted to make it 19-17 at the break.

Within four minutes of the restart Carnegie were 24-17 in front after they showed their skill once again in the driving maul.  At the line out Mayhew’s high pass was won by Ben West and the forwards drove the ball close, before Ollie Stedman broke off the back to crash over for the bonus point try in the corner.  McColl missed the conversion and then a penalty kick.

Bedford increased the pressure and came close to claiming a try but good defence from Carnegie and McColl pushed Bedford into touch as they headed for the try line.  They were able to bring the game level though on 57 minutes with a skilful try.  After winning the lineout, with a double pass in the air Bedford spread the ball across the field and then Will Hooley put a pin point chip kick to Dean Adamson on the wing and he then raced to the corner for their third try and Hooley added the conversion.

Momentum then switched in favour of the hosts who earned a penalty try after Bedford were punished for bring down the maul and then Mike Mayhew was driven over for his third try of the came after 71 minutes.  McColl converted to give his side a 38-24 lead.

Bedford had more left to give in the game and in the 73rd minute they were rewarded when Chris Czekaj used his power to break through a tackle from Andy Forsyth and cross for a try in the corner.  Hooley added the conversion to make it 38-31.

In the closing stages the Blues kept up the pressure as they went in search for a try to level the game and they were given a numerical boost when Whetton was sin binned for a professional foul before Richard Mayhew was given a yellow card for killing the ball.  They made the most of this advantage when Alex Penny stretched out to get the ball over the line.  The referee originally ruled for a knock on but after consulting his touch judge let the try stand.  Will Hooley then stepped up to take the crucial conversion to level the game, but his attempt hit the posts with the final kick of the game.
