Hartpury RFC 29 Yorkshire Carnegie 29

23rd September 2017 4:22 pm By Phil Daly

A second half fight back and three quality tries from Yorkshire Carnegie were not enough to secure victory as James Lowes side had to settle for a 29-29 draw in their first ever game against Hartpury.

Yorkshire Carnegie endured a nightmare first half in the sunshine at Hartpury as they found themselves 26-11 down at the interval having conceded four tries to the newly promoted side.

Hartpury had served notice of their intent this season when they pushed big spending Bristol all the way in the opening game of the season and the chance to claim the scalp of last season’s Greene King IPA Championship runners up clearly had them fired up for this clash.

Yorkshire were in control of the early stages. Following good work by Andy Forsyth and Ollie Stedman they opted to kick a penalty to the corner in search of the opening try only to be pulled up when Forsyth dropped a subsequent pass from Pete Lucock. However, they were not put off their stride and took a 6-0 lead with two penalties from Alex Davies as they opted to go for goal from the next two penalties near the home line.

Hartpury had been competitive at that stage but Carnegie had good control of the game however the home side managed to score on their first visit to the Yorkshire try line when scrum half Harry Randall exploited a gap down the blindside following a penalty on halfway for a high tackle. He raced through from 20 metres out from the rolling maul and James Williams conversion from the touchline put his side in front 7-6 after 15 minutes.

Hartpury increased their lead soon after, once again from a penalty. This time the forwards kept the ball tight and hooker Luke Stratford was bundled over the line for the try. The conversion was missed but the home side had their tails up now at 12-6.

The home side did however add to their margin with five minutes to go to half time when back row Mat Gilbert picked up and went over from close range following a line out near the Yorkshire try line. Williams added the conversion to make it 19-6.

Carnegie needed to find a response and they came up with a sensational try to get back into the game. Full back Chris Elder collected a kick 15 metres from his own line and set off on a run over halfway before offloading to Pete Lucock, he returned the pass to Elder and then rejoined the line to eventually take the return pass and go over for the try. Davies was unable to add the conversion but the gap was now 19-11.

However, Hartpury managed to cross for the bonus point try in the final seconds of the first half when hooker Stratford managed to get over beside the posts. Williams kicked the conversion with the last effort of the half and make it 26-11 at the interval.

Yorkshire came out fired up at the start of the second half but, despite some determined running, they were unable to find the telling pass to unlock the Hartpury defence.  However on the hour mark they did manage to find a way through. Yorkshire had gone close just before with a break by Mike Myerscough but smart play from Homer eventually proved the difference as he ran at the home defence before working a move that put Elder in space. He went through the gap and then cut inside to beat the defence and score. Alex Davies added a superb conversion to cut the gap to 26-21 with twenty minutes to go.

Carnegie kept up their impressive run of tries with the equalising score ten minutes from time. Mike Mayhew set his side going when he turned over the ball near his own line before putting Homer away. He found Stevie McColl, who in turned released Louis Brown to score. Alex Davies conversion attempt hit the post and rebounded away to leave the game poised at 26-26.

Davies was able to put his side in front four minutes later with a penalty but as the clock ticked down to zero Hartpury levelled the game with a penalty from replacement Jacob Perry.

There was still time for late drama as Carnegie camped themselves on the home line only for the officials to deny them a match winning try in the final seconds when James Thraves was adjudged to have been held up over the line.
