Yorkshire Carnegie’s Academy coaching staff are already making preparations for next season and recently organised and attended a coaching session to learn from coach development expert, Mark Bennett MBE.

Mark, who joined the British Army in 1983 and has been training, coaching and mentoring individuals and teams since the early 90s, was invited to deliver a workshop around how he sets up a learning environment with sports teams and to talk more about Performance Development Systems (PDS).

PDS is a support tool for anyone whose role involves influencing people and it runs alongside technical and tactical knowledge and skills. With over 28 years development, PDS provides an organic structure to support the effectiveness of both the person using it and the people they wish to influence. The underlying principle is that when you impact on a person’s behaviour both supervised and unsupervised, it will drive performance which facilitates results.

Yorkshire Carnegie were joined by coaches from other environments and sports and Mark delivered a mix of classroom and practical sessions with Yorkshire Carnegie’s current Under-15s.

Stuart Dixon, Academy Coaching Development Officer for Yorkshire Carnegie said: “We would like to thank Mark for delivering a very informative session for our coaches.  He has a wealth of experience in many different sport and we all found it very useful and it certainly helped check and challenge our current philosophies and we are already looking to get more clarity on our behaviours for both coaches and players leading into next season.

“In our roles of developing future players for our club and the national team we understand how important it is that we continue to expand our knowledge, be open to ideas and use the tools that are available to us, such as PDS, to ensure we are able to offer the best environment for our players to thrive and maximise their performances.

“It is also vital that we continue to support coaches working in our schools and clubs and this is what our coach education programme is all about and we are busy planning the schedule for next season.”
