Yorkshire Carnegie Academy youngster Joe Carpenter was on familiar territory this week when he met up with the England U17 Development squad for their North training camp at West Park Leeds RUFC.

The young full back played all his junior rugby since the age of six at The Sycamores and has progressed through the county ranks and into the Yorkshire Carnegie ERDPP set up. Previously at Lawnswood School, he is now studying at Woodhouse Grove and this week was part of the national squad as they trained in Leeds.

As well as familiar surroundings, he had a familiar face with him in fellow Yorkshire Carnegie Academy member in Ted Wainwright was also part of the camp. Wainwright attends Ripon Grammar School and last season captained the Yorkshire U16 rugby squad and led his school’s U16 squad to the Yorkshire Cup final.

The Under 17s were also joined by the Under 18 Development squad which also included a Yorkshire Carnegie Academy player. Joe Gatus, who is Head Boy at QEGS in Wakefield, joined up with the national squad as he looks to follow in the long line of players the club has produced for the England U18 squad in recent years.

There were some familiar names in the group with James Whitcombe, the son for former Leeds stalwart Martin, in the Under 17 group and Samson Ma’asi, the son of former Carnegie hooker Vili, in the Under 18 group, which also included Bryan Redpath’s son Cameron.
