Leeds Beckett RUFC’s 1st team suffered an agonising 24-18 defeat to rivals Cardiff Metropolitan University at West Park Leeds on Wednesday night.

Beckett went into the clash full of confidence, hoping to upset 2nd place Cardiff but the Welshmen proved too strong for the home side.

The Bears started off strongly, with dominant possession and territory in the early stages but were denied numerous chances from good scrambling defence by the visitors.

Beckett took the lead through a Connor Lloyd penalty but a brilliant inside ball from Cardiff unlocked the exceptional Beckett defence to give the visitors a 7-3 advantage.

After a nip-and-tuck first half, Beckett found themselves in the ascendency once again, in-form Winger Daniel Leake finishing off a sensational team effort in the corner, giving Beckett an 8-7 lead at the break.

Beckett’s half time advantage was short-lived, as Cardiff scored another scintillating try to reclaim the lead, 14-8, before Beckett conceded another shortly after to go down 21-8.

Despite the 13-point deficit, Beckett continued to fight hard and worked their way back into the contest, James Elliott finding his way over the try line to make it 21-13.

A late penalty to Cardiff all but sealed victory for the visitors but Beckett had the final say in the game as Captain Trystan Lloyd rampaged over to bring the scores to 24-18.

Leeds Beckett are back in action next Wednesday when they travel to Hartpury in a game you can watch live on the BUCS Super Rugby website.
