Biography

Originally from Rotherham, Steve moved up the M1 to attend Leeds Metropolitan University, graduating in 2004 in BSc (HONS) Sport & Exercise Science prior to achieving a First Class Honours Degree in Physiotherapy in 2008. Following graduation Steve had a brief nine month spell within the NHS alongside a successful season as the Academy Physiotherapist at Featherstone Rovers RFL, under previous Carnegie player and coach Daryl Powell.

He was initially appointed as Yorkshire Carnegie Assistant First Team Physiotherapist in August 2009, witnessing the two seasons in the Premiership under the Andy Key and Neil Back before being promoted to Lead Physiotherapist in 2011.

Steve’s role as Lead Physiotherapist is to prepare the players for games and provide duty of care on pitch. Thereafter he is required to thoroughly assess new injuries, following up such with an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation programme until the player returns to competition. A vital aspect of the role is close liaison with the Strength & Conditioning staff in monitoring the team’s readiness to train via weekly screening of physical and neuromuscular fatigue as well as reading injury trends via audits and training loads.

Steve was selected by the RFU as an Honorary Physiotherapist to The RFU Championship XV Vs New Zealand Maori’s in November 2012 and again in 2014 against Canada. He also works with triple Olympic Snowboard Cross athlete Zoe Gillings as well as private sports injury patients. More recently he traveled and worked with Samoa Rugby Union screening their players around the UK in preparation for World Cup 2015 squad selection.

Along with former Leeds Rhinos Physiotherapist David O’Sullivan, Steve was one of the first five Physiotherapists in the UK to be trained in Active Release Technique (ART). He is trained to Level 2 in neurokinetic therapy (NKT) and completed Myokinetic Restoration and Postural Respiration from the Postural Restoration Institute (PRI).

He is also underway in achieving his accreditation with the UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) and is studying MSc Sports Physiotherapy at University of Bath.

Outside of work he has played to a high level at football, representing his county and a local semi-professional team. He is also a keen fitness fanatic enjoying most sports.
