Prof. Paul Smith

Paul Smith

Paul joined Leeds Metropolitan University in October 2010 from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. Part of his responsibilities includes sport partnerships. He joined the Board of Directors at Yorkshire Carnegie in 2013.

Having not considered academia as an option Paul joined the Army at 16 straight from school to become an engineer. On leaving the army he worked as a civil engineer with various local authorities moving a number of times from Suffolk to Leicestershire, Buckinghamshire and then Hertfordshire. Along the way he undertook a number of academic courses through part-time study in order to become a Chartered Engineer.

A few years after completing his degree he had the opportunity to undertake some teaching and this lead him into his second career as an academic. Whilst teaching structural and civil engineering he wrote a textbook on structural mechanics and completed a PhD working with the Independent Broadcasting Authority and the BBC investigating the structural dynamics of tall masts and towers when subjected to wind loading. A key element of this research was an analysis of the collapse of the guyed mast at Emley Moor in Yorkshire.

Apart from work, he is an Assessor for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions, a qualified abseiler. He began playing rugby at school and in the army. Over the years he moved clubs a number of times playing for Woodbridge, Old Ashbeians, Chiltern and Harpenden rugby clubs floating gently in from the wing to hooker/prop. The front row taking its toll, he became a referee with the Hertfordshire Society and is now a keen follower and supporter of local and national rugby.
