Yorkshire Carnegie winger Seb Stegmann is urging fans to get behind his side as they make their bid for promotion against London Irish in the play offs at Headingley Carnegie on Wednesday 17th May, kick off 7.45pm

Stegmann, who won promotion with London Welsh back in 2014, is hoping to repeat that feat with Carnegie and believes home support in that first leg will be a big motivator for the team.

“The first leg at home will be really important for us in setting a platform for final game,” said Stegmann.  “If we can take a lead and good performance into the second leg that will stand us in good stead for the last 80 minutes.

“Home support will be key for us in that first leg and I hope there will be a packed stadium cheering us on.  When games are close the fans can play a big part in lifting the team.  This is the first time the club have made it through to the play off final so it would be great if the Yorkshire public could get behind us and fill Headingley Carnegie.

“I played in the Final with London Welsh and we achieved promotion against Bristol.  I had a back spasm in the first leg so missed most of that game, but returned for the second leg and it was a fantastic experience.  The lessons I can take from that experience going into this final is we need to stick to our systems and do what we are good at.  Anything can happen in a final, so there’s all to play for.  There will be nerves but once that whistle goes we need to focus to be at our best to give ourselves the best chance.”

Yorkshire Carnegie have qualified for the play offs on three previous occasions but this is the first season they have made it to the final and are aiming to earn their place back in the Aviva Premiership for the first time since the 2010-11 season.

“It’s pretty exciting to be heading into the Final and being just two games away from the Premiership,” added Stegmann.  “Since I joined the club two years ago we have been building towards this and there is a lot of anticipation and excitement around the club.

“I think we are in good shape for these games.  We had a good first leg against Ealing and a bit of a sticky game in the second leg.  This was good experience for us though and although we lost that second game, we did enough to make it through to the Final and learned how to manage playing across two legs.

“We are expecting a hard fought battle against Irish.  They have a strong set piece so the forwards will need to put in a big shift and the backs will need to be on top form.  London Irish are a skilled team who have performed well all season, but we know we have enough left in our tanks to challenge them.

“We played well against them in the home game at Headingley Carnegie and although I have a lot of respect for them, I don’t think they are world beaters and I am confident in our side’s abilities.

“It would be massive for the county of Yorkshire to have a team in the Premiership.  Everyone at the club is striving for that and it would be great to bring top flight Rugby Union back to Yorkshire.”
