Yorkshire Carnegie head coach Bryan Redpath said his side has been dealt a few injury blows this week ahead of their game against Jersey but said he is confident in the strength of the squad and the players that will come into the side.

Looking ahead to the fixtures against Jersey Reds in the British and Irish Cup, Redpath said: “We have a few bumps and bruises coming into the game.  Lee Imiolek has had a back flare up so we have had to take him out and James Thraves has got an illness.  Richard Mayhew broke his thumb last weekend after coming back from being ill.

“In the pack we are fortunate that we have a couple of boys coming back as well with Cusack in the mix and we have to get on with it.  We have some good players to fill in these positions and so it’s not too bad.  Alex Grey has got a tight groin too so he misses out, fortunately we have got a really good squad and so we can accommodate some injuries and changes in personnel quite easily.

“Mike Mayhew came into the squad last week and played really well and put pressure on the other guys, so we have given him an opportunity, he is a good scrummager and his throwing was good at the weekend. Phil and Ross have been good but we see this as an opportunity for Mike to come in and put in a big performance.  We know that Jersey are a strong physical side, they like the scrum and the drive, so we need to make sure everyone has that focus and Mike has got that bit of physicality in his size so hopefully he can use it well.”
