What will be the second biggest attended Rugby Union domestic match in England this week? Leicester Tigers host Worcester Warriors at Welford Road on Saturday for the largest attendance of the week but the Leeds Varsity clash between Leeds Beckett University and the University of Leeds at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Wednesday night will attract a bigger attendance than the Aviva Premiership big hitters like Saracens, Harlequins and Bath.
Over 15,000 tickets have already been sold for the annual clash. The fixture has grown to become one of the major sporting events of the year for Headingley Carnegie since its inception 12 years ago.
The annual Mens Rugby Union clash is the culmination of 60 fixtures across 25 different sports all in one day. This match is all ticket and tickets must be purchased before 12noon on Wednesday 5th October. All tickets that are purchased in advance must be collected by 12noon on Wednesday 5th October – after this time any tickets that are not collected will be cancelled and no refunds will be given. There will be no option to purchase tickets on match night.
Commenting on the event, Leeds Rugby’s Head of Customer Experience Sian Jones said, “Varsity is one of the biggest events in our stadium calendar now. Having so many spectators arriving for the game who are visiting us for the first time does present us with some unique challenges but it creates an incredible atmosphere. We work very closely with both universities for months before the event to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible for all concerned and everyone has an enjoyable night.
“The match is a real showcase for the stadium. As a venue we are right in the heart of the student community in Headingley and it is great that we can invite them in for a special night at the start of their university life. Leeds Beckett will also be playing four of their BUCS Super Rugby games at the stadium this season which shows that student rugby is very important to us. All who attend are able to take advantage of a free ticket offer for Yorkshire Carnegie’s next home game against Jersey Reds on Friday 28th October in the Greene King IPA Championship as well so hopefully this will be the first of many visits to the stadium for the students,” added Jones.
For the upcoming 2016-17 season, the BUCS Super Rugby division has been launched where the top eight men’s sides in the country battle it for the biggest prize in University Rugby. Leeds Beckett University, who were BUCS Champions two years ago, will play Cardiff Metropolitan on Wednesday 12th October, reigning Champions Exeter on Wednesday 2nd November, Durham on Wednesday 30th November and University of Bath on Wednesday 14th December. All games kick off at 2.30pm.
