Over the last month Yorkshire Carnegie Academy players have been putting their cookery skill to the test by taking part in their very own ‘Come Dine with Me’

The Come Dine with Me experience for the players was the idea of the club’s nutritionist, Debbie Smith, who was looking for an interesting and engaging way to help teach the young stars how to cook as well as understand healthy choices when food shopping.

The Senior Academy players were all challenged to come up with their own healthy recipes and then in pairs cook them up for their team mates, who were then asked to judge how good they thought the meal was.

Speaking about the sessions Debbie Smith said: "The players have been learning to make their own healthier version of takeaways.  We started off going through a budgeting session and we did a supermarket sweep.  This was important because I think one of the main issues for these guys is being able to afford to buy the amount of foods that they need to eat and for it to be healthy as well.

"These players are the ones who are moving out of home and learning to cook for themselves so it’s not just about budgeting these sessions are also about learning cooking skills.  All the players are still growing and it is important that they eat food that meets their energy needs for the amount of training they do and the games that they have so it’s essential that they get good nutrition."

Scrum half Matt Dudman and fly half Sam Allan, were in the kitchen this week cooking a healthy fish and chips, and in the dinning seats to taste their cuisine was fly half, Max Green and back row Jack Barnard.

Speaking about the experience Max Green said: "Over the past two weeks we have been doing cooking classes and myself and Jack Barnard cooked for Sam Allan and Matt Dudman.  We did a gourmet burger which I think will be better than their fish and chips! It’s been a good experience to show Debbie and the other coaches that we can cook and I have enjoyed it.
