Young Yorkshire Carnegie hooker Jack Walker missed out on the Greene King IPA Championship Player of the Month after Bristol’s Marco Mama topped the public poll.

Just under 2,000 supporters registered their votes for January's accolade, with Mama claiming victory after a series of impressive performances for the West Country side.

A product of the Bristol Rugby Academy, the 23-year old has scored six tries for the promotion contenders this season having now fully established himself as a first team regular.

Mama proved instrumental in Bristol's victory over Jersey last month, scoring two tries during a close encounter at St Peter's. He was also named Championship XV Man of the Match following the showpiece game against Canada in November.

"I'm delighted to have been voted January's player of the month” commented Marco.

"It's a great honour and I'm enjoying my rugby immensely at the moment. It's important to keep working hard and helping Bristol in our charge for the play-offs."

The Zimbabwean received votes from across the Championship, including those from fellow clubs not represented amongst the four nominees. He joins teammate Matthew Morgan as a fellow Player of the Month winner and Moseley's Sam Olver.

Mama's win is followed by Worcester's Sam Betty in second place, and Yorkshire Carnegie's Jack Walker in third.
