Four players have been nominated for January’s Championship Player of the Month, with Yorkshire Carnegie included in the list for the first time. Jack Walker (Yorkshire Carnegie), Marco Mama (Bristol Rugby), Sean Romans (Nottingham) and Sam Betty (Worcester Warriors) make up this month’s shortlist.

England U20s and Carnegie hooker Jack Walker is named amongst the shortlist which includes three forwards and one back. The 18-year-old was named captain for Yorkshire’s Championship match against London Scottish, eclipsing former Carnegie player Jacob Rowan as the youngest ever skipper (aged 22).

A product of Prince Henry’s Grammar School in Otley, Walker was part of the Junior World Championship winning squad in 2014 and more recently was named in the England U20s squad for the upcoming Six Nations.
Joining Walker amongst the forward contingent is Bristol flanker Marco Mama. A product of the Bristol Rugby Academy, the 23-year old has scored six tries for the promotion contenders this season having now fully established himself as a first team regular.

Mama proved instrumental in Bristol’s victory over Jersey last month, scoring two tries during a close encounter at St Peter’s. The Zimbabwean was also named Championship XV Man of the Match following the showpiece game against Canada in November.

Nottingham’s Sean Romans is the only back to be named in this month’s shortlist. The New Zealander, who joined Nottingham in 2011, has started all three games for the Green & White’s in January, scoring a try against London Scottish at Lady Bay. Described as the “heart-beat of the side” by a panel member, Romans has proved instrumental with his quick and accurate ball skills, linking effectively with November nominee Dan Mugford in the backs.

Facing Romans this weekend in round 14 is final nominee, Sam Betty. The Worcester Warriors flanker joined the club in 2011 from fellow Championship side Cornish Pirates and has flourished under Dean Ryan’s regime, featuring 27 times since the Director of Rugby’s arrival.

The 28-year old has scored an impressive 13 tries in 11 games, most recently putting two scores past Doncaster last weekend, and is currently 10th on the league’s top try scorer table.
